Brent & Liz Hoffman
Brent and Liz both grew up in families that gave them opportunities to hear and receive the love and forgiveness of Christ at a young age. As they became adults, their early beliefs developed and they sought to be obedient to God’s leading wherever it would take them. Brent grew up in Pennsylvania. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Family Studies from Messiah College and a Master’s of Divinity from Alliance Theological Seminary. Liz grew up in Oregon. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts from George Fox University and her Master’s degree in Counseling from Alliance Theological Seminary.
Brent and Liz met in Oregon while Brent was completing an internship at Salem Alliance Church. They were married in 1999, moved to New York together, and worked at Alliance Theological Seminary (Brent) and Nyack College (Liz) for about a decade. Brent coordinated chapels and field education (practical ministry training). Liz served as a career counselor and taught communication and career development classes. Both found their work in higher education fulfilling, especially working with students from around the world who came to study in the New York City area.
After about 10 years, they felt God leading them to make a change. So in 2009, they moved to Alaska. They had the privilege of serving as lay leaders at ACF Church in Eagle River, where people are regularly finding freedom and new life in Christ. While in Alaska, they worked a variety of jobs, including teaching in schools, and at a camp where they regularly saw bears, moose, and other wildlife. Not too many people can honestly say that they have chased bears away, but this was a regular part of their Alaskan life. As much as they loved their life and ministry in Alaska, they sensed God calling them to pursue ministry in Czech Republic.
From the time Liz was a teenager, she had an interest in Czech Republic (a pen pal, a college study trip, and multiple Czech neighbors fostered this). Meanwhile, Brent had broader ministry interests and felt at home working with youth, college students, homeless people, young couples, and international students. But he noticed a Czech thread running through Liz's life.
As a couple, we decided to explore ministry in Czech Republic. After 2 short term ministry exploration trips (2013 & 2015), we believed God was calling us to take a bigger step: mid-term ministry in Czech Republic. We arrived in Prague in August of 2017 and anticipate serving for 2-3 years. We love that we can work alongside TEAM members who are already here. We are studying the Czech language, teaching conversational English as ministry, working with a local Czech church, and hope to show orphans they have a Father who loves them.
A verse that encourages us is Ephesians 2:10 "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." Wherever we are or will go, we have hope that God is already there preparing the way for us.
Primary Prayer Request:
Pray that we would: 1. manage ministry responsibilities, language learning, and overall well-being, 2. communicate the Gospel clearly to our students, and that they would be receptive, 3. make the most of discipleship opportunities, and 4. work well as a couple, extending grace to ourselves and each other.
Join us in thanking God for: 1. an apartment near public transportation that allows us to extend hospitality, 2. TEAM Czech's support and encouragement, and 3. English students who are asking faith questions.
