My Story

We met in doctoral programs in linguistics at the University of Michigan. In our 26 years overseas with TEAM, we have translated the Old Testament in the northern Philippines (5 years), served in five churchplants in Russia and Ukraine—including one in a Muslim area—and trained churchplanters from all over the former Soviet Union in two ambitious training programs (18 years).

We now have returned to our first love, Bible translation, and our first country of service, the Philippines, where we have been since 2009.

3 grown children: Adam (married to Blanche), Arwen Martin (married to Nick) and Eden

Ministry Focus:

The Lord has led us back to our first love, Bible translation, this time having the time of our lives working together as consultants. This means helping translators make their work even more clear, accurate and natural.

The People:

The colleagues we directly serve are Bible translators, a wide range of wonderful men and women doing some of the most important work on earth, with education levels ranging from post-graduate to elementary. In the Philippines, most of our seven projects to date have been providing Scriptures for church associations asking for help. The Lord has linked us with various agencies in mainland Asia that are providing his word for strategic, under-engaged people groups in the M*slim world, Hindu world and Buddhist world.

Primary Prayer Request:

We ask God to help us work well with translators to make his word a sharp sword in each target language, so that it incarnates him richly, as did the incarnation of the living word, Jesus.
