My Story

Roger H. Luce, Ed.D.

TEAM, in cooperation with our sending church, is asking us to partner with Africa Inland Mission to help them engage with unreached people groups. I'll be a curriculum design consultant for TIMO, their two year apprenticeship program. I’ll be helping team leaders implement adult learning strategies as they develop their team members.

Title:

Lifelearner Network Coordinator

Family:

wife Lois; Kevin (and Bridget: Savannah, Caleb, Malachi, Abigail); Christopher (and Naomi: Benjamin)

Ministry Focus:

My ministry has been primarily in response to Paul?s instruction to Timothy that ?what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.? Our sending church has confirmed with TEAM that they would like us to relocate to Africa in order to partner with Africa Inland Mission and their TIMO program. TIMO is a respected, effective training program for teams of cross-cultural workers among remote or unreached people groups in Africa. My role will be to develop the program that will equip future team leaders, and help revamp the curriculum for team members. I will partner with the curriculum Coordinator to implement Communities of Practice and other current learning models and tools. Additionally, TEAM would like Roger to be learning from TIMO (who already have 25 years of outstanding success in deploying these teams), in order to help TEAM develop a similar program for use in other parts of the world.

The People:

Carly and Shawn have relocated their lives an 8 hour hike from the nearest road in an African nation, where they live in a remote village on the top of a mountain ridge. Led by a veteran cross-cultural worker, working as a team with 8 other ?ex-pats? they will invest two years to reach an unreached people group who have no other chance of hearing the good news. Their commitment combines rigorous study with personal relationships to communicate effectively across cultures. Shawn says, ?I can hardly remember what I studied in seminary four years ago. The difference here is that we actually live it. For example, when I am studying about spiritual warfare, and then go out in the village and I am interacting with a witch doctor, then I see a direct correlation between what I am studying and what I am experiencing.?

Roger's role will be to develop and oversee the program that will equip future team leaders, and help revamp the curriculum for team members. I will partner with the curriculum Coordinator to implement Communities of Practice and other current learning models and tools. This will include getting to know all aspects of the TIMO experience through site visits at all stages of the work, from initial survey to final debrief.

Primary Prayer Request:

Our goal is to be fully funded in time to leave for Africa in January of 2015. Currently we have about 40% of our support committed. We will also need set-up and travel funds. Pray for the sale of our home, and for our deputation ministry.
